Spring Reading Thing 2009

Happy first day of Spring!!

And, no March 20th would be complete without Katrina throwing down the gauntlet again - just as the weather here in Michigan is FINALLY improving, she's challenging us to hunker down and tackle a stack of books! LOL

Her Spring Reading Thing challenge starts today! And, she wants to know what we'll be figuratively chewing on the next 10 weeks. In the interest of balance, I tried to pick a mix of fiction and non-fiction this time....so here goes:

NONFICTION
Underground History of American Education by John Taylor Gatto
A Charlotte Mason Education by Christine Levinson
Jesus Take The Wheel: 7 Keys to a Transformed Life with God by Stuart Migdon
Grace Based Parenting by Tim Kimmel
The Girl's Like Spaghetti: Why, You Can't Manage without Apostrophes! by Lynn Truss

FICTION
Twenty Wishes by Debbie Macomber
The Heretic's Daughter: A Novel by Kathleen Kent
Magi by Daniel L. Gilbert
Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens

Ambitious? OH, yea! But, we'll see! Stop by Katrina's (I'll put in the direct link when she puts up her post) and see what everyone else is tackling. (I ended up changing my list at least twice when I see what the other participants have chosen! LOL) And, good luck!

Two days ago it was 60 degrees here, today it is snowing with a vengeance. I like snow but enough is enough. Without a car I can't even take the kids to the library in this weather - can you see me trying to push the stroller over the snow mountains? :)

That's a great reading list!

In the Charlotte Mason realm, you should check out The Charlotte Mason Companion by Andreola. She has a very nice, easy-to-read style.

Hey, I just finished A Tale of Two Cities a couple of months ago! I couldn't believe how good it was and how long it took me to get around to it.

Right now I'm reading A Pocketful of Pinecones by Andreola and How to Find Selfless Joy in a Me-First World by Vernick. Both are very good. I'm finding the one by Vernick to be very spiritually challenging - in a good way.

I'm also alternating one NT book with one OT book in hopes of reading the whole Bible in a year. I'm currently in Numbers. John next.

I'd be interested in a review of Grace Based Parenting when you get there. ;)

oh and Andreola incorporates some Montessori stuff in her "Companion" - I thought it was a nice complement (as in the two approaches can work together to some degree) and I know you like Montessori.

Just stopping over from Callapidder Days...

That is an impressive list...I'm thinking I should get back to reading some of the classics...

I have a feeling that my Amazon wish list is going to grow significantly the further into this challenge I get!

Happy reading!

Looks good, Beth, and we'll both be reading Pride & Prejudice this spring! I thought Grace-Based Parenting was good -- lots of good nuggets to remember and apply. Thanks for joining the challenge!

I love Pride and Prejudice. I've never braved Dickens before, but I'm trying one now. :)

LOL about Katrina throwing down!!

I'm unfamiliar with most of those, except, of course, the last two classics. I keep seeing Debbie Macomber's name, but haven't read anything of hers yet -- will have to give her a try.

Terrific list! I started Gatto's Underground History, but never finished it. I'd like to. I also want to read Lynne Truss's books. By the way, your kids are ADORABLE!

I read a Tale of Two Cities in school and while I do not remember most of the details I do remember it being good. And I love the first line. Classic. :)

It does sound like an ambitious list, but a good one :) Happy reading!

Great list! I want to read Dickens at some point, but I keep forgetting to add it to my list. Maybe a summer read this year!

Interesting list! I read most of A Tale of Two Cities not long ago. It was such a different experience reading it as an adult from what I remember of reading it in high school BUT it was still very challenging and I didn't make it all the way through in the time I had alloted. Good luck with the challenge!
